Victorian Velvet Covered Fire Proof Jewelry BoxI was initially drawn to this box because its covered in velvet and my favorite color but I got quite a surprise when I tried to pick it up! It weighs TEN POUNDS. The box was designed to be fire proof; beneath the velvet is thick, heavy metal. The box does have quite a bit of wear, as shown: Wear to the velvet, greening of the metal hardware, surface dirt, etc. The red silk interior has held up better. this kind of leather is known as “limp ooze” in bookbinding

but the piece finds new life on your dresser as a display for other jewelry
